Cards Counting Basics

Probably many of you have heard that a competent casino player can defeat a casino. In majority of cases the game is Blackjack and the method is “cards counting.” A possibility to apply the “cards counting” method at the online casinos is rather limited as the casinos usually shuffle the cards after each deal, but there are some casinos offering to gamble until the third pack (or rather not one pack but a set of 6-8 packs). There are also live dealer online casinos where the blackjack is played as at brick and mortar casinos, so you can really try to use any cards counting system (though on-line you shouldn’t use any).

Probably most of you can remember the scene from the “Rain man” where a Hoffman’s hero after some training counted the cards in an expert manner thereby the brothers won a lump sum. Cruse’s hero told him to remember low and high cards coming out and to show with his stakes what cards mostly came out. Why do they do that? How can it help to win?

That’s rather simple, they do it to make the game less random and it is in reality quite a simple method. If you remember a pack of cards has 52 cards, then the probability of various cards to come out is just 1 / 52 or 0. gimmick or a method to beat the game, is born. In truth practically all of them do it subconsciously to beat the odds.

The explanation for why they do it is quite simple. If you remember aces and eights, there are only two possibilities, you are either getting stiffs or you are receiving low cards. In case of high cards you either ran into kings or aces. So in case of receiving low cards, the probability is just 1 / 22 or 4.8%, it is just simple probability.

The same thing applies to middle cards. The probability for the player to get a ace and a medium card is just 1 / 38 or 3.6%, the probability for a player to get two high cards is 1 / 13, or 3.4% or simpler, the probability for a player to get a king and an ace, is 1 / 38 or 3.6%.

Offline casinos also use a variation of the standard 52 card deck. Several decks of the same rank may be used, for example, the deck may contain two jacks, two tens, two aces, or two fours. The reason is rather simple, the probability for a player to get a flush is 1 / 40, nearly the same number as for a straight flush. Furthermore, the probability for a player to get an Ace and a card of the same kind is 1 / 13, so if the casino uses the same basic strategy for both a flush and a straight, the odds will even out.

As explained before, most of the online casinos fail to offer the variants of blackjack they do offer the conventional casinos. When you request a number of decks of cards, you should be able to get a better hand than any of the dealer’s, most especially if you request a deck of cards with the least number of decks. At the same time, when you ask for a “Dewavegas” it’s not trying to overlook something, it’s actually trying to protect something. Its main goal is to make the casino waste time, thus your time. Shoe-dropping is an excellent strategy to slow down the dealer so you can get your hand as strong as it can be.

Many people keep a close eye on the cards being dealt, and if they see the dealer has a soft hand, they will certainly inform the casino to shuffle the deck. However, hardened gamblers and smart players know there can be another explanation. For example, if a lot of cards are being dealt to the dealer, due to card clouds or whatever else, flipping a large number of cards, including the most important cards, the dealer may have a royal flush in his/her draw, and is not going to be doing so with normal cards. At that point it would be logical to bet the minimum and keep the hand secret.

The participant of the hand following the basic strategy bet would usually not be able to tell if the next card is going to hurt him and unless he/she discovers some tells, like a sudden change in betting or throwing of cards, it is nearly impossible to guess with 99.5% accuracy.

While fascinating, the game of Hold’em is not really a worthy opponent to Omaha Hold’em. The mechanics are different, the draws are different, it is possible to bluff, and any bluff is likely to be profitable. Nevertheless, when participating in any home poker games, it is best to play with a standard 52-card deck for the game of Hold’em, and a specially made deck for the Omaha Hold’em game.
